Youth Specialty Classes

The YMCA of Jefferson County offers Youth Specialty Classes such as drawing, animation, cooking and baking, jewelry making, dungeons and dragons, LARPing and so much more!
Classes are once a week for six weeks. Offerings will be announced one month prior to session start dates. 


Registration is open at the YMCA of Jefferson County April 8 - May 2, 2018 or until classes is full.


Age:    7-12
When: Tuesday 4:00pm-5:00pm
Animation Class will be Tuesday, May 8 to Tuesday June 19, 2018

Cost:   YMCA Members $85 per session class
           Community Members $95 per session class

Age:    7-12 
When: Thursday 4:00pm-5:00pm
Dungeons and Dragons Class will be Thursday, May 10 to June 21, 2018

Cost:   YMCA Members $85 per session class

Class Descriptions

Ceramics- Ages 7-12
Youth will explore basic building and glazing techniques while creating items such as bowls, cups and sculptures. Participants will also learn proper use, care and storage of tools.

Cooking and Baking- Ages 7-12 or 18-99
Our recreational hands-on cooking/baking classes offer delicious, locally inspired, healthy food in a social environment. Not only will you walk away with delicious food, but you will walk away with cooking/baking skills as we focus on technique. Session classes will focus on special themes or topics with details TBA during registration.

Drawing 101- Ages 7-12 or 18-99
Whether you are an advanced sketch artist or just starting this is a fun class. Drawing is a great confidence builder and a way to express yourselves creatively. Explore all the basics of drawing, different kinds of paper, pencils and other media.

Drawing Anatomy- Ages 18-99 
Discover all you need to know about human body anatomy, proportions and how to draw figures and portraits in a realistic manner.

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D)- Ages 7-12 
The many worlds of D&D are places of magic and monsters, of brave warriors and spectacular adventures. They begin with a foundation of medieval fantasy and then add the creatures, places, and magic that make these worlds unique.

Improv- Ages 7-12 or 18-99
In addition to honing your acting skills, learning the art of improvisation can help in areas from public speaking to professional development and even interpersonal relationships – if communication requires thinking on your feet, training in improvisation can benefit your life.

Jewelry Making- Ages 7-12 or 18-99
The art of jewelry making involves both creativity and skill. This class is the perfect fit for beginner jewelry makers to test out their skills. Participants will learn many types of techniques, from beading to wire wrapping and beyond. This is a perfect time for those who always wanted to try beading without making a big commitment.

Live Action Role-Playing (LARP)- Ages 7-12
LARP is a role-playing game where participants physically act out their characters' actions. Participants pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by the real world while interacting with each other in character.

Painting- Ages 7-12 or 18-99
Explore painting and color while creating a landscape, still life or abstract in acrylic and watercolor. You will have fun with the process of building a painting in layers starting with composition, drawing, and exploring color.

Sculpting- Ages 7-12 or 18-99
Get ready to get your hands dirty as you create three dimensional figures, objects and worlds from your imagination. Participants will learn sculpting terminology, techniques, tips and tricks to express themselves through the ultimate sensory art form.

Visual Arts and Animation- Ages 7-12
Youth will learn the steps it takes to create their own animated short films. From character design and script writing to story-boarding and specialized animation. Learn the techniques real animators use in the industry and come away from it with your imagination made real as only moving pictures can create.

Woodworking- Ages 7-12
Youth will explore basic woodworking by designing and building projects based on skill level. Participants will also learn proper use, care and storage of tools.
