Financial Assistance:

Everyone is welcome. No child or family will be turned away due to inability to pay. The YMCA is a non-profit agency supported in part by generous donations from our community. We are proud to offer financial assistance to those in need. If you are seeking financial assistance for After the Bell, you must first apply for the Child Care Subsidy Program through the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). Please call 1-360-565-2180. Our provider number is 320709. DSHS will notify you if you qualify for childcare assistance, when assistance will begin and end, the amount of your co-payment and which child or children assistnace is for. DSHS will also notify you if you do not qulify for childcare assistance.

DSHS Financial Assistance:

If approved, you and our YMCA of Port Angeles office will receive written notice of your approval from DSHS. The YMCA needs confirmation from DSHS that approval has been granted prior to your child attending After the Bell. If you are denied by DSHS, please bring your letter to the YMCA of Port Angeles office. Please note if you are denied DSHS assistance, you may apply and use whatever YMCA financial assistance you qualify for.

It is very important that you seek DSHS approval before making changes to your child's registration status (for ex. going from part-time to full-time). If DSHS does not cover services you have received, you will be personally responsible for paying the remaining balance.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Super Rec Time:

Every child needs the opportunity to unwind after a day of being “on” at school. We provide that at the Y, allowing down time and a healthy snack before classes start each afternoon.

Fundamentally Fit Classes:

This innovative component of After the Bell pairs physical activity with project-based activities. Research shows this pairing provides positive results for both health and academic achievement. Each 60-min class includes CrossFit Kids methodology, project based learning, and traditional tutoring. Each day students utilize fitness spaces at the Y and the park for physical activity and then return to the library at the YMCA for academic work.

Components of Fundamentally Fit:

  • Daily Physical Activity Period- Fun, quality movement and varied activities are the basis for Fundamentally Fit, providing a solid foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Group games, circuit style exercises, dance and sports are introduced throughout the school year.
  • Daily Library Period – Children have access to tutors and staff for traditional homework help with all school subjects and are introduced to additional exercises and stimulating activities that promote literacy and hone skills.

Enrichment Classes:

Offered in 1 month sessions, the Y is proud to present a variety of Arts, Hobbies and Sports classes. Classes begin at 4:00 pm and are held at the YMCA facility unless otherwise indicated. Classes are open to students in grades K-6. Children in Grades K-1 are grouped into a class called Arts and Action that explores all of these subjects throughout the course of a month. Children in grades 2-6 will choose which classes they would like to participate in at the beginning of each month. The Y provides a schedule of classes by month at the beginning of each school year.

  • Art Classes: Y Staff and a variety of local experts teach a full range of art skills. From metal working to oil painting to printmaking, students have the opportunity to find their artistic outlet.
  • Hobby Workshops: Y Staff and a variety of local volunteers share their hobby passion with our students. Everything from Legos to chemistry and architecture can be found at the Y at some point during the year. Sewing, and cooking are also on the schedule.
  • Sports Skills Clinics: Y Staff and local volunteers work with students to learn new skills and develop those they already have in sports both old and new. Archery, Gaga Ball, Skateboarding and many other sports are offered at different times throughout the year.
