After the Bell

After the Bell is designed to promote and enhance academic achievement, spark your child’s imagination and expand their confidence, skills and talents by pairing physical activity with homework support and project based learning. This program is available at the YMCA of Port Angeles and the YMCA of Jefferson County.

Everyday at the Y we create outstanding child-centered programming in a nurturing learning community where the values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring are learned and developed. After the Bell is designed to be flexible enough for working families, with classes that empower kids to make healthy choices and try new skills.

We start each afternoon with a healthy serving of fresh fruit, students then get a 1/2 hour of exercise, both indoors and out, followed by focused time in the Y library where tutors help with homework and provide quiet games that support academic achievement. Enrichment classes are held from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm allowing youth to explore a variety of arts, hobbies and sports. Enrichment classes rotate monthly.

After The Bell Registration Packets must be filled out for each participant.
Packets are available at the Y, 302 South Francis Street in Port Angeles or 1925 Blaine Street in Port Townsend.

Super Rec Time:

Every child needs the opportunity to unwind after a day of being “on” at school. We provide that at the Y, allowing down time and a healthy snack before classes start each afternoon.

Fundamentally Fit:

This innovative component of After the Bell pairs physical activity with project-based activities. Research shows this pairing provides positive results for both health and academic achievement. Each 60-min class includes CrossFit Kids methodology, project based learning, and traditional tutoring. Each day students utilize fitness spaces at the Y and the park for physical activity and then return to the library at the YMCA for academic work.

Components of Fundamentally Fit:

  • Daily Physical Activity Period- Fun, quality movement and varied activities are the basis for Fundamentally Fit, providing a solid foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Group games, circuit style exercises, dance and sports are introduced throughout the school year.
  • Daily Library Period – Children have access to tutors and staff for traditional homework help with all school subjects and are introduced to additional exercises and stimulating activities that promote literacy and hone skills.

Enrichment Classes:

Offered in 1 month sessions, the Y is proud to present a variety of Arts, Hobbies and Sports classes. Classes begin at 4:00 pm and are held at the YMCA facility unless otherwise indicated. Classes are open to students in grades K-6. Children in Grades K-1 are grouped into a class called Arts and Action that explores all of these subjects throughout the course of a month. Children in grades 2-6 will choose which classes they would like to participate in at the beginning of each month. The Y provides a schedule of classes by month at the beginning of each school year.

  • Art Classes: Y Staff and a variety of local experts teach a full range of art skills. From metal working to oil painting to printmaking, students have the opportunity to find their artistic outlet.
  • Hobby Workshops: Y Staff and a variety of local volunteers share their hobby passion with our students. Everything from Legos to chemistry and architecture can be found at the Y at some point during the year. Sewing, and cooking are also on the schedule.
  • Sports Skills Clinics: Y Staff and local volunteers work with students to learn new skills and develop those they already have in sports both old and new. Archery, Gaga Ball, Skateboarding and many other sports are offered at different times throughout the year.
  • Girl Scouts at the Y: (YMCA of Port Angeles) Our troop is lead by experienced Y staff who are also Girl Scout registered volunteers. The Troop meets Thursday from 3:30– 5:00 pm. All girls registered in After the Bell are welcome. There is an additional Girl Scout registration fee of $25.00 to the Girl Scouts of the USA. Scholarships are available through Girl Scouts of the USA.

In collaboration with the Port Angeles School District, transportation to the Y will be available from each school. Check with staff to determine specifics for your school. All lower elementary (K-3) students will be met by staff as they exit school or get off the school bus. Upper elementary (4-6) students will walk escorted from the bus stop at 5th and Francis to the Y.

Early Release Days:

On early release days the kids will follow their regular bus routes arriving 30 minutes earlier for extra Super Rec time before classes begin.

Supervised Recreation:

“Super Rec” The Y understands that everyone, including children, needs time to unwind from the days pressures. Children arriving at the Y for after school classes can enjoy short periods of supervised recreation time in our game room and gym, while they wait for classes to begin. Super Rec is also offered from 5:00-5:30 pm each day after classes conclude.

Healthy Snacks:

Each day during Super Rec there will be fresh fruit or vegetables and water available for all students who want them. Students are welcome to bring and eat their own snack. Sharing is allowed only if enough is available for all children.

After the Bell classes will follow a holiday schedule similar to public schools. If public schools are closed for holidays there will be no After the Bell classes. Watch for workshop offerings on in-service days and during extended school breaks.

Parking at the YMCA:

Pick up for After the Bell classes will be on 3rd street with a designated loading zone and entrance. Please use regular parking if you intend to be in the building for more than pick-up.
